Declaration Brest Fortress Area Development Concept

Global Context

In the modern world, culture is not only a platform for the highest artistic achievements, but also an economically profitable activity, an instrument for urban, territorial and community development.

The world experience clearly demonstrates that inclusion of the cultural and historical heritage into the tourism potential of the territory yields high social, economic, investment and image-building dividends.

Today’s agenda includes territorial marketing based on the artifacts of cultural and historical heritage, and the history of the area.

The Brest Fortress is one of the chief cultural and tourist resources not only in Belarus but also in Europe, which is due to the following unique characteristics of the area:

–        The Brest Fortress is a powerful and emotionally strong brand that is linked to the history of World War II.

–        The Brest Fortress is a complex of developed and undeveloped premises, unoccupied aboveground and underground spaces suitable — owing to their rational planning and striking architecture — for large-scale exhibition and/or festival projects.

–        Its transit route position next to the state border and the ethnic and cultural diversity create additional networking and partnership opportunities for implementation of heritage projects.

–        Proximity to such an important landscape reserve as the Białowieża Forest makes it possible to organize two-three-day-long tours, which would start at the Brest Fortress.

Proponents of the new area development concept are confident that THE BREST FORTRESS IS A ROBUST RESOURCE FOR SOCIAL, CULTURAL, AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF THE BREST REGION AND ALL BELARUS.

Project Objectives:

To unite all the area-based resources and initiatives so that they could be subsequently integrated into the project more efficiently;

To encourage local cultural and business communities of the region to generate new relevant project ideas in the field of tourism;

To create an efficient and sustainable cultural tourism industry, which would focus on area development and address major social and cultural challenges:

–        enhancement of the area’s investment appeal

–        job creation

–        urban infrastructure development

–        increase of tourism-sourced revenues for the country
